At any given time there are usually numerous opportunities to earn a bonus when buying miles or points. For the most part it is the same 8 to 10 programs that offer them like Alaska, American, Hilton and so on. On occasion however we get a rare buy miles bonus from a program that isn’t famous for doing so. The last one I recall was Turkish Airlines this past February and now there is this one. Caribbean Airlines is offering a 40% bonus when you buy their Caribbean Miles.

Miles cost US$30 per 1,000 miles so with the bonus you’ll end receiving 1,400 miles for every $30. That’s just over 2.1 cents per mile. As I don’t have a set valuation of Caribbean Miles I did a quick check of whether it is worth it to buy miles with this bonus and like in so many cases it would depend on which flights, dates and routes. I looked at two different scenarios:
Scenario 1
I looked at a week long round trip flight between New York City and Kingston Jamaica in Business Class. The cash price was $772 including all taxes and fees while an award flight would require 50,000 miles + taxes & fees. This means you would have to purchase of 36,000 miles with this bonus promotion. The cost for 36,000 miles is US$1,080 so in this case it wouldn’t be worth it. However I only checked one trip, perhaps there are times where buying miles could work in your favor
Scenario 2
I looked at a week long round trip flight between New York City and Georgetown, Guyana in Economy Class this coming November. The cash price was US$765 including all taxes and fees (Economy Classic fare as that includes 1 checked bag like an award flight) while an award flight would require 30,000 miles + taxes & fees. This means you would have to purchase of 22,000 miles with this bonus promotion. The cost for 22,000 miles is US$660 so in this case it might be worth it depending on what the taxes and fees are.
As always there is no harm in buying a small amount with a bonus if you simply need to top off for an award flight.
