Air Canada is out with their next buy or gift points offer and this time it is a mystery bonus. So far we have seen them offering up to 75% bonus points and another offer of up to 85% (Thanks to Chris C. and Dennis for letting us know). This is a tiered bonus that increases with the more points you buy and it runs until October 10, 2024
Personally, I received an offer for up to a 75% bonus that is broken down as follows:
- Buy 4,000 – 10,000 points receive a 40% bonus
- Buy 15,000 – 20,000 points receive a 50% bonus
- Buy 25,000 – 500,000 points receive a 75% bonus
When you buy points at the 75% bonus level your cost on each point is 2 cents (C$). If you are in Canada you’ll have to pay GST/HST so you are looking at approximately 2.1 to 2.3 cents per point. Even with the bonus this a relatively high per point price to pay for Aeroplan considering other buy points promotions from Aeroplan in the past have the per point price well below 2 cents. I would only recommend buying points with this offer if you find a redemption with a high CPP value of 2.5 cents or more.
If you get a higher bonus, like the 85%, then you are even better off and your price will drop to below 2 cents per point before taxes.
In our more recent Aeroplan Availability Alerts on RWRDS Canada, both of them provided value above 2.5 cents per point so it can make sense to buy the points:
- Austrian Airlines Business Class Montreal to Vienna for up to 8 or more people per flight (3.55 cents per point)
- SWISS Business Class Montreal to Zurich for up to 8 or more people per flight (2.69 to 6.5 cents per point)
Outside of redemptions like these I would not buy points speculatively as there should be other promotions in the future where you will be able to buy the points for less.
