When it makes sense to buy miles
Now you may be asking why this is an offer of note. It is for several reasons, the first of course is to top off your account for an award if you happen to be shy a few thousand miles however the second is the big one.
That second reason is when Air France KLM offers those 25 to 50% off business class Promo Rewards. In the past they have had 50% off business class out of North America and if they bring those back you could fly for only 50,000 miles round trip to Europe, Turkey and North Africa. Combining a 50% buy miles discount with a 50% off for business class can represent significant savings over paying cash for the same flight.
If you do not have any Flying Blue Miles at all you could purchase miles at the 26,000 level (they only sell them in 2,000 miles increments) for US$793 and you would end up with 54,000 miles covering the round trip 50,000 mile requirement.
Lately however we have only seen the odd 25% off business class out of Canada with the Promo Rewards. Still, the 25% reward flights discount with this 50% buy miles discount can provide some significant savings.
In terms of a 25% off business class reward, if you do not have any Flying Blue Miles at all, you could purchase miles at the 76,000 level (they only sell them in 2,000 miles increments) for US$1,159.
You would then redeem 75,000 of those 76,000 miles for a round trip business class reward flight and on top of that you would need to pay close to $600 in fees and taxes. All in all that business class flight would come in under $2,000. And that’s why this buy miles promotion can be an offer of note.
