SriLankan FlyMiles has brought back a rare bonus to receive up to a 100% bonus when you buy miles  To the best of my knowledge this only the second time the airline has offered a bonus on buying miles – at the very least it is only the second time ever we’ve had it on FFB with the last bonus being offered in late 2020.

The up to 100% bonus for buying miles

Receive up to 100% bonus when you FlySmiles Miles. Valid until Sep 30, 23. Click here for more details

Bonuses awarded as follows:

  • Buy 2,500 to 9,999 miles receive a 50% bonus
  • Buy 10,000 to 29,999 miles receive a 75% bonus
  • Buy 30,000 or more miles receive a 100% bonus

FlySmiles Miles have to be purchased in blocks of 2,500 miles and cost US$60 per block. With the promotion you can buy a maximum of 100,000 miles which means you would end up with 200,000 miles for an outlay of US$2,400 or only 1.2 cents per mile. That number looks good at first sight but when you look at SriLankan’s reward chart that’s where things don’t look as good.

The redemption amounts for many of the reward flights are extremely high with lots of business class  options pricing out well over 200,000 miles per round trip. I haven’t dug deep into their charts as they are quite honestly some of the longest charts I have ever seen in any frequent flyer program (the reward chart PDF has 42 pages!)

Perhaps with so many options there might be some sweet spots to be found but I didn’t see any with my cursory glance at them. If you have the time to Sherlock the charts and do find some compelling reward options that would provide value out of buying their miles please let me know!

As a good proportion of our readers are in North America, I did take the liberty of taking a screen shot  of the reward chart for redeeming for flights departing off the continent: (Purple amounts are charged when you call in, Blue are for booking  online):
