The buy points bonus for Marriott Bonvoy was due to end yesterday but has been extended to April 3. The promotion provides up to a 50% bonus and is awarded on purchases from 2,000 to 100,000 points and that 100,000 is a doubling of the typical 50,000 point annual limit for buying points.

With a 50% bonus you end up buying points for 0.83 US cents each – higher than the 0.7 cents we typically value Bonvoy points at but you have to remember that 0.7 is our minimum. There are many examples of where you can redeem points and get a per point value well above 1 cent, 2 cents or even 3 cents a piece. Ultimately do the math to see if it makes sense for you to buy points – don’t just buy them because there is bonus. The big question will be what will these points be worth when Marriott moves to dynamic pricing in March. Any guesses that that may just happen on March 24 the day after this bonus ends? With dynamic pricing there will no doubt be a loss in value for the most part but there may be occasions where you can get more value. If I was to guess I put my finger on a valuation of 0.5 cents once they get rid of the award charts.

The promotion this also includes a 10% discount for members globally who purchase points with a China UnionPay credit card (starting with digits 62) when they buy 2,000 or more points.
