Aeroplan has brought back a buy points bonus for the next week and a half or so. This tiered offer sees bonuses ranging from 50% to 80% dependent on how many points you buy. This offer runs until July 30 and allows members to buy up to 350,000 points per transaction. If you buy 3,000 to 24,000 points you’ll earn a 50% bonus, 25,000 to 55,000 points will earn a 65% bonus and 60,000+ will earn the 80%.
If you buy points at the 80% level, which kicks in at 60,000 or more bought points your cost on each point is 1.67 cents (C$) each before taxes. We value Aeroplan points at a minimum of C$ 1.5 cents each so it wouldn’t make sense to buy them for the minimum level redemption but on our Canadian site we had a post from last week on extracting value from the best ever Aeroplan American Express card bonuses where we showed redemption examples of 1.72 cents (for economy class) and 4.35 cents (for business class). In both of those cases it would make sense to buy points as you would end up saving some cash – especially on the business class redemption!
