Some of the best frequent flyer miles out there are Alaska Airlines’ Mileage Plan miles so when they are offered with a bonus when buying them people take notice. For the longest time the biggest bonus on buying Mileage Plan miles was 50% but in the latter half of 2020 we saw that boosted to 60% and even 70% for select members. Well we’re happy to tell you that that the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan buy miles bonus is back and once again we see it up at the 60% level!
At 60% you’ll be buying Mileage Plan miles for as little as 1.85 US cents each. This used to be 1.72 cents but we see the U.S. tax recovery fee reinstated now. Still it so easy to pull well over 2 cents per mile value out of Mileage Plan that buying them for 1.85 cents US is a really good deal.
Here’s an example of the savings it can provide – how about flying Business Class with Japan Airlines from Vancouver to Tokyo. It is 120,000 Mileage Plan miles for one way + US$101.10
And cash wise:
As you can see to buy this flight outright from JAL with cash would be over C$10,000 or about US$8475 – however by buying Mileage Plan miles you can cut that price by nearly three quarters:
You can buy 120,000 miles for US$2217.19 (+GST/HST if you are in Canada) and if you add in the award flight taxes of just over US$101 you are looking at all in cost of around $2318 Still a decent chunk of change but definitely a huge savings over buying the same flights outright.
