!! A note about Aeroplan’s bonus multiplier !!

Just a note that Air Canada applies a different style of math when it comes to their flight bonus multipliers.

For example, typically when a bonus offer is advertised as 2x points it is double your base earning amount, such as 1,000 points becomes 2,000 points. However, Air Canada Aeroplan is now taking the multiplied amount and adding it on top of base points. That is,  if you earn 1,000 base points, and the bonus offer is 2x, they will take the 2x points which would be 2,000 points and add it to the base earn where you would end up earning 3,000 points. (Basically 3x points in the context of all other bonus offers we have published on Rewards Canada for 25 years)

I dug into this after seeing a 1x points offer and thought to myself, why would they be advertising that as a bonus if you aren’t multiplying your base amount? Well it turns out that 1x points is actually 2x points as their example of 500 points means you’ll earn a total of 1,000 points.

In the case of this global 4x bonus points offer if your base earn is 1,000 points they will ADD 4x the points to that amount for a total of 5,000 points or what every other loyalty program would call a 5x points offer (Aeroplan really should use this method as it makes the promotion look even better since 5x looks better than 4x!)

I hope that helps everyone make sense of Air Canada’s bonus multipliers!
