Air Canada Aeroplan’s 40th Anniversary celebrations kick off today and one of the highlights is this limited time buy points offer. Until July 11, members can buy Aeroplan points with up to a 125% bonus which is one of the highest bonuses we have seen in some time from Air Canada
When you buy points at the 125% level your cost on each point is just under 1.56 cents (C$) each before taxes. For Canadian residents who will have to pay GST/HST you are looking at approximately 1.64 to 1.79 cents (C$) per point.
Since we value Aeroplan points at a minimum of 1.5 cents each you would think it wouldn’t make sense to buy them for that amount but there are times where you can extract a lot more value. It is totally possible to get around 2 cents per point for economy class redemptions and well over that for business and first class redemptions.
In the cases where you can extract more redemption value than you pay for points, then it can make sense to buy them as it essentially discounts your travel.
After July 11 Air Canada will still offer a bonus for buying points which will max out at 100% from July 12 to 19.
