As each calender quarter roles around many loyalty programs launch new bonus offers, as June 30 is the end of the second quarter it can be expected to see an onslaught of new offers from airline, hotels, car rental agencies and more. Today's highlight from Iberia is one of those and as we've seen in the past they usually offer a good set of flight bonuses for each quarter (or part of each quarter). The majority of their flight promos come with one catch, they don't give you too much time to register for the promotions!

FFB Insider: A Golden Tulip blooms in the bonus garden
European based Golden Tulip Hotels may not be as well known in the loyalty circles as brands like Starwood, InterContinental or Marriott but it appears they may be wanting to change that. FFB has been tracking or better said tracking the lack thereof of bonus offers for Golden Tulip's Flavours program for many years but only added them to our websites this year. Why did we only add them in 2011? Up until early this year we could not find evidence of one bonus point offer for the Flavours program. There were occassional offers for bonus miles from one of their seven airline partners but never bonuses for their own loyalty program. Come 2011 and that seems to have changed, it appears Golden Tulip is adopting a mildly aggressive marketing campaign for their Flavours programs and for their airline partners.
It all started earlier in the year, when for the first ever we found hotel stay bonuses for Flavours members posted on the Golden Tulip website. To say we were surprised was an understatement as the Flavours special offer page was bookmarked and visited by us once a week for the past 2+ years and it always stated the same thing: "No Special Offers at this Time" (or something like that). What Golden Tulip Flavours had rolled out was some stay bonuses for select locations in Asia, OK, not huge but still they offered something. These offers ran for the first quarter and a little beyond. Our next question here at FFB was "Would it continue?" It sure did. As late April rolled around, our weekly check of the page showed new Flavours bonuses for stays at a few Golden Tulip locations in Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany and Hungary that were valid for the remainder of the year. A week or two later and the list was expanded to include properties in France and Poland.
Fast forward to the middle of June and suddenly we are finding more Golden Tulip bonuses, this time it is double miles for their airline partners and not for one or two properties but for virtually every property that Golden Tulip operates from Armenia to the U.S. and in between. First it was Saudi Arabian Airlines Alfursan that released the offer and this was quickly followed within the next week by Oman Air Sindbad, American Airlines and finally Qatar Airways. Chances are the promo will be available to members of the other airline programs that are partnered with Golden Tulip but we have not found them or they have not been publicly posted yet. Air France KLM's Flying Program does however have a separate promotion running for Kyriad, Kyriad Prestige and Campanile Hotels managed by Golden Tulip offering Triple Miles for weekend stays at participating locations Worldwide.
The Golden Tulip Flavours program seem to have come full circle from the years before and embraced the power of the bonus offer promotion whether it is from within their own loyalty program or for their partner's programs. The first six months of 2011 have shown that they are willing to take the plunge to offer such promotions in attempt to attract more business to their properties and compete with the larger hotel chain's loyalty programs. Time will tell whether these marketing efforts will pay off for this small European brand, if we continue to see the release of these bonuses, then one could assume it did. As always we will keep you up to date on all the bonuses offered by Golden Tulip on the Frequent Flyer Bonuses websites and to see what they are currently offering please visit our Flavours Bonus Point Opportunities page.

FFB Insider: The Battle for Kiev

Bonus offers for competitive routes, but no matching allowed
For the better part of two years both airlines have maintained a strategy for attracting and retaining loyal customers by consistently offering promotions for flying to or from Kiev. In fact Kiev is one of the few cities in the world that has enjoyed some sort of flight bonus offer every day of the year since mid 2009. What makes the competition interesting between Aerosvit and Ukraine International is that there little to no matching of the FFP promotions they run. Unlike airlines in the U.S. who go head to head and match their competitors flight bonus offers, in the Ukraine it seems to be norm to not do so. The majority of the bonus offers doled out by these two airlines are on routes that they both compete on but they seem to be perfectly happy taking turns at offering bonus miles on those routes. Its as if they are discussing their promo ideas with each other. I could just see the conversation: "We are going to offer double miles for Kiev-Simferopol flights in July, you can have August"
So why offer a bonus in the first place? In the terms of our current subject, there are two reasons to offer bonus miles on the routes that your rival also flies. First is to try to pull your rival's frequent flyers over to your airline and to also keep your customers from defecting to the other airline (customer retention) both of which definitely play a role in the Kiev situation. For many of the established routes that both Aerosvit and UIA fly it is unlikely they are offering bonus miles to stimulate overall demand and rather are offering the bonuses for the two reasons we state right above.
We're launching a new route, have some bonus miles
Continuing on the topic of stimulating demand, both Ukraine based airlines are active in route launch bonus offers. This is where the bonuses are used more to stimulate demand and attract new customers to the new route. There are some frequent flyers who may not be aware of a new route that is being flown by their favorite airline until they see an email offering them double miles for flying it in the first month or so. In this case the bonus offer is more of marketing tool rather then customer loyalty tool. Where it takes on more of a loyalty tool is that route is already flown by another airline and the bonus offer is put in place to attract the other airlines frequent flyers on that particular route.
Status for sale
In January of this year, Ukraine International took an unprecedented step whereby you could buy status miles to make up the difference if you didn't fly enough in 2010 to reach an elite level. What made this offer unique was that you did not have to fly at all, you could have a zero mile balance in the Panorama Club program and buy Gold Status for US$1000. Would such an offer be considered a product dilution (too many status members) or a clever marketing move to retain flyers who may now focus more of their flying on UIA since they can enjoy the perks of being elite. Technically its both, in the eyes of their current elite customers they will see it as dilution as you have more people competing for lounge space etc. while the airline sees it as a great customer retention tool.
Hey wait a minute, we want a piece of the action
The battle for Kiev is not only being fought by the hometown airlines, earlier this year Air France KLM wanted a piece of the action by offering a bonus for residents of the Ukraine only. The offer was for Double Flying Blue Miles for flights between Kiev and Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Geneva, Barcelona, Dusseldorf, Manchester, Madrid, Munich, Stockholm, Milan, Lisbon or London. All the routes except for Manchester are flown by either Aerosvit or Ukraine International and definitely points at Air France KLM wanting to cherry pick the international business traveller from the two Ukrainian airlines.
What will the future hold?
As the country slowly recovers from their large economic downturn in 2008 and 2009 the two airlines should continue to see the significant growth that they have been experiencing in the past 18-24 months (UIA is seeing growth excess of 20%). However with only a limited amount frequent or premium travellers flying within or in and out of the Ukraine the airlines will have to continue to harness the marketing powers of their FFPs. By using route bonus offers the airlines hope to achieve that little bit of incremental revenue by keeping their own or stealing each others passengers at the small cost of issuing more miles.

Great Reward Ticket Bonus Offers from Alitalia and Etihad
You may recall that not too long along we starting tracking discounted award/reward offers from all the various travel reward programs (see this FFB page for a summary) and in the past week two airlines have come out with some really great promotions on their reward tickets. Alitalia's applies right to your first booking while Etihad's requires you to redeem for 5 tickets, either way both offers are well worth taking advantage of:
Alitlia MilleMiglia
AZ's offer will provide MilleMiglia members with a 40% MilleMiglia bonus on each reward ticket that is redeemed for. That is, if you redeem for an economy class ticket between New York and Milan for 50,000 MilleMiglia miles, they will provide you with 20,000 bonus miles afterwards. This offer is good on all standard reward tickets in all booking classes, so the higher the redemption value the higher the bonus. This offer runs until June 30, 11. For complete details please see here.
Etihad Guest
Etihad's offer also provides members with bonus miles after redemption but in EY's case you have to complete 5 reward ticket redemptions. All five redemptions do not have to take place at the same time but all have to be booked by July 31. Once you have completed all 5 bookings, Etihad will award you with bonus miles equivalent to the lowest value booking out of your 5 redemptions. to make the most of this offer you will want to try to go for some bigger redemptions to ensure a bigger bonus is returned to you, nonetheless whatever route you go you will end up with enough miles for another redemption at that lowest level.
For Example: you redeem for 4 business class tickets between North America and Abu Dhabi at 140,000 miles each but then redeem your 5th one for economy class for 70,000 miles, your bonus would be 70,000 miles or enough for another economy class ticket from North America to Abu Dhabi.
Full details and registration for this promotion can be found here.
You may ask why offer bonus miles on redemptions? Why not just discount the reward ticket as that would be easier? The primary reason is that with a discount there is no guarantee you may come back to fly that airline and use their FFP again. By offering you bonus miles after the fact you are being encouraged to continue using that FFP and its partners to earn more miles within the program. In fact promos like these kill two birds with one stone, they promote redemption and lower mileage balances on the FFP's books while potentially keeping the member active in the program.
Up to 10,000 Marriott Rewards Points per night at the Courtyard Detroit Pontiac/Bloomfield
I was doing my normal bonus point updates and adding new offers to our Marriott Rewards Bonus Opportunities page and came across this offer for the Courtyard Detroit Pontiac/Bloomfield. It is promoted on Marriott's site as 6,000 Bonus Marriott Rewards Points per night however when you click through to check availability, the room and rate selection page also has a 10,000 points per night offer. I decided to check how much more this rate is then the regular best available rates. The dates I checked were July 15-17 and the 10,000 point rate was $129 per night versus $79 for the advance non-refundable rate or $89 for the best available rate.
Now usually I don't like bonus offers that charge more then the best available rate but many hotel loyalty programs offer these type of bonuses for an extra fee (IHG's Bonus Point packages to name a one) and are general referred to as the "Screw your Employer rate" as most people who book them are not paying for the room but are collecting the points, so why not get extra points while you are at it.
In this case, it may be worth it to pay the extra amount if you need to stay at this hotel or in this area. Lets take a 4 night example, you would earn 40,000 Bonus Rewards Points at a cost of $200 (the extra $50 per night). What can that 40,000 bonus points get you? A stay at a category 8 hotel such as the Paris Marriott Hotel Champs-Elysee which usually runs well over EUR300 per night. Split this into 2 stays and you can also take advantage of the Marriott MegaBonus summer offer of earning a free night after completing 2 stays. Not a bad deal at all.
As a comparison, if your travels do not take you to Pontiac then you can buy the points from Marriott for roughly the same amount as a 4 night stay at this location.
For more details on this offer see here.

Bonus Offer Highlight June 1: Virgin America
Today's Bonus Offer Highlight could be seen as a retaliatory move against American AAdvantage. AA recently launched a Double Mile+Double EQM offer on these same routes so it stands to reason that Virgin America had to match in some way.
