Carlson Hotels GoldpointsPlus reduces points needed for free nights at top tier hotels

In what some are calling a response once again to the Hilton's recent devaluation of their HHonors program, Carlson Hotels has dropped the amount of points required for a free night stay at over 300 of their top tier hotels. Of course the first swipe at HHonors was taken by InterContinental Hotels Group.

The reduction in Goldpoints required comes in the Category 4, 5 and 6 hotels. Prior to Feb 1, these redemptions were 45,000, 60,000 and 90,000 points respectively. That has now been dropped to 40,000, 50,000 and 60,000 respectively.

For a more comprehensive review of this change and on the Carlson Hotels brands please see this post by Loyalty Traveler Ric Garrido

Japan's two largest carriers duke it out with system wide double mileage campaigns

What started out as a thank you to customers of Japan Airlines during their rough times and bankruptcy issues, has turned into a war between the country's two rivals.

Japan Airlines Mileage Bank started it all with their JAL Mileage Project 2010. A way of saying thanks and of course to retain or gain new customers. The JAL Mileage Project 2010 is a great selection of promotions for members of JAL's Mileage Bank program. The primary promotion is Double Mileage Bank miles on all flights systemwide with very few restrictions (ie International flights on JAL metal only, code-shares not applicable). The double mileage offer runs April 1-May 31

On top of this they are offering a First Flight bonus that again is pretty much available on all flights like above. This offer however is only for Flyon Status members and JAL Credit Card holders worldwide.

The next promotion is for also for Flyon Status members, whereby they will earn double status miles from April 1 to September 30

The final bonus offer is for JAL Credit Card holders only where they will earn 400 bonus Flyon (Status) points over above the double listed above.

Also included in JAL's promotion are discounted reward tickets for JAL Credit Card holders, and additional upgrade points or lounge coupons to Flyon status members.

For more details and to register for all these offers see this page on JAL's website

Of course, seeing that its primary competitor launched these promotions, there was nothing else to do ANA All Nippon then to launch their own campaign. While not as extensive as JAL's, ANA only wanted to match the most important part of JAL's offer, the double miles for flights systemwide. That is what ANA is offering, Double Mileage Club miles to all members who register for the offer. It also has similar restrictions in that International flights must be on ANA metal and not on partner airlines. Just like JAL's offer, ANA's promotion runs April 1 to May 31.

For more details on ANA's offer click here.

Now, the question that begs to be answered is: will non-Japanese airlines match the double mileage offers on at least their home country to Japan flights? We have not seen anything yet but if we do you will see it posted below as a comment (or if you do please post it below!).

United introduces Miles and Money Awards

Don't have enough Mileage Plus miles to redeem for a flight? Now you can use your balance that is short plus some cash to book flights on United. Granted these flights come with some more restrictions then flights you buy outright with cash or miles. Still with these restrictions the Miles and Money Awards can be a very good option for people looking to use up their miles and for United to help lower the liability of the balance of miles held by Mileage Plus members.

Basically, with Miles and Money awards you book a round trip flight for fewer miles and make up the difference in cash. Miles and Money awards are currently only available on flights operated by United and United Express, all other partner airlines are not eligible. You must fly from your origin to destination direct (Connections OK, Stopovers not OK)

For full details please see United's Miles and Money Awards.

IHG targets disgruntled Hilton HHonors members

In a very smart marketing tactic, InterContinental Hotels Group Priority Club is taking advantage of the recent devaluation of the Hilton HHonors program (see our Nov 3, 2009 post). In the wake of all the negative press and backlash on the Internet, IHG realized that the increased number of points required for HHonors reward stays was something the could use to try and pull business away from Hilton.

How is IHG taking advantage of this? By launching the 'Luckiest Loser' promotion where they will give any HHonors member 1,000 free Priorty Club points just for registering, plus a chance to gain back up to 20% of your HHonors points in Priority Club points (max 20K) if you have on e of the top 20,000 HHonors balances and the luckiest loser, who is the HHonors member with the highest verified balance, will win 2,000,000 Priority Club points.

Since launching, the promo has already made its way through to some of the more popular travel blogs, forums and press and the comments from HHonors members are that they are taking advantage of the free points (whether or not they plan on staying at an IHG hotel) and some look forward to trying to win the luckiest loser, I have seen some HHonors members state they have between 200,000 - 900,000 HHonors points in their accounts at this time, so I know my measly 15,000 or so won't even come close to coming in the top 20,000 losers.

Definitely a good move on IHG's part, build a database of HHonors members which will allow them to provide targeted offers to them to try and pull them away from Hilton and keep them in the IHG brand of hotels.

For more details on the promo and to sign up for it please visit IHG's Luckiest Loser page

Choice Hotels wants grow Internationally yet only targets the U.S. in their promos?

I have been meaning to comment about a couple of hotel chain reward programs that offer some decent system-wide bonus point opportunities but usually only target them to the U.S. market. When I read this blog post about Choice Hotels wanting to grow Internationally it reminded me of the subject and I think now is the perfect time to comment on it.

Of the two hotel programs I mention above, one is Choice Privileges, the Frequent Guest program for Choice Hotels International. I have been posting bonus offers for the Choice Privileges program for many years and I would have to say that at least 75% if not more of their system-wide promotions were for members based in the U.S. only, the remaining 25% may have included Canada and the Caribbean as well. I have actually talked to Choice Hotels about this as I am affiliated with them and they wanted to know how we could increase bookings via the Frequent Flyer Bonuses Group of websites. I told them to increase bookings they need to open up the promotions to members outside of the U.S. but up until this blog post, they told me there focus was strictly on the U.S. market.

So the question is, will Choice Hotels bonus point promotions be expanded to include more or if not all possible members to help them grow Internationally? With the current promotion that runs until Feb 18 (see our Choice Privileges page), it has two options, you can earn Triple Privileges Points or Triple Airline Miles. The points option is only available to U.S. members and Miles option appears to be open to anyone. So here Choice does give an option to non U.S. members, however by offering only the miles, the member is remaining loyal to that airline program not to Choice Privileges. If Choice opened the points offering to all non U.S. members, some would choose to earn points and those members have a greater chance at staying at another Choice Hotel in the future to help build up their Privileges balance for a free stay. Right now, someone may stay at Choice Hotels for the miles but once the Feb 18 deadline comes up there is nothing stopping that person from staying at another hotel chain as they have no loyalty to Choice.

One thing I am not aware of, is if their is an issue with their IT or corporate procedures that prevents Choice Privileges from offering system wide promotions Internationally. If they want to compete with and become one of the top Frequent Guest Programs this is something that needs to be done.

I don't mean this post to bash Choice Hotels, as I stated above we are actually affiliated with them and would like to see our partnership be successful but with much of our traffic originating from Frequent Flyers and Guests that are from outside of the U.S. it makes it difficult to do that.
